Why is stress the enemy?

Everyone talks about stress and for most people stress is harmful and responsible for failures that can occur in our daily lives. Furthermore, few have a serious explanation for it and fewer still take it seriously.

The truth is that stress can be of benefit under certain circumstances and when only limited to a short duration in time. Otherwise it can work against us. It is important to know how to control it and use it to our benefit.

Our body reacts when facing an event involving a particular risk or danger. The level of adrenaline increases under stress and this manifests itself in somatic changes such as an increase in heartbeat and breathing. This is the way our body prepares itself in confronting these dangers. These changes involve an additional consumption of energy that is necessary to keep our muscles tense.

As a result we feel more tired faster than in normal circumstances. In order to relieve this stress we often resort to an increase in our consumption levels of coffee, smoking more and these activities seemingly make us feel better. In time, there is a gradual worsening of this situation and as result become more nervous, anxious, irritable, susceptible to catching colds more easily, a decrease in our concentration levels, our memory begins to be less effective and a tendency to forget more easily. In other words we become vulnerable and less productive.

If we do not take action at this stage to remedy this state of affairs, we could develop chronic fatigue and increase our level of stress with insomnia or hypersomnia, changes of behaviour and cognitive difficulties. Worse still, we could develop serious medical conditions such as ulcers, heart disease or psychological disturbances.

Advice on how to tackle stress

Understand the reasons behind your stress and do not be afraid to identify those reasons. Once you know the cause, it is much easier to come up with a solution.

Think of solutions. What would you need to do to make yourself feel better?
How would you feel if the reasons for your stress are identified? What alternatives are available? Try to find short term as well as long term solutions. If it appears that there is no solution to your problem, it could be that you are approaching it in the wrong way. Another avenue may need to be explored in order to solve the problem. What is the worst case scenario that could occur? Does it depend on you or another third party to help in order to make you feel better?

Find other ways to reduce tension. Try to relax. Try to develop a hobby  if you haven't already got you. Listen to music that gives you a feelgood factor. Discuss your worries and problems with family and friends. Socialize and enjoy your free time with them and do not focus too much on your problems.

If you succeed to reduce your stress levels do not wait for the next set of events that are going to cause you stress. Develop a technique to prevent and protect you from future stressful situations.
