Psychotherapy does not offer a magic pill, which you take with you home and are cured, all is perfect and all problems have disappeared. I help you help yourself. In psychotherapy one works with the ”patient’s material”. That’s why it is good to know that by large it depends on you, your willingness to communicate your problems and to find a solution. The psychotherapist offers his help and listens to you without the fear of being judged. The higher benefit is that once the pain that you feel now stops, you will discover a new world. You will: Do not delay; you are postponing your own life. There are many forms of psychotherapy. Regardless of his/her training, there certain rules that have to be respected and which are good to keep in mind when you contact a psychotherapist:
-Be surer of yourself (self esteem);
-Feel more valuable;
-Understand better your reactions;
-Understand better other people;
-Communicate easier;
-Interact better in the world that you belong.
-The sessions take place in a specially defined place, the psychotherapist’s office;
-The sessions have a certain frequency established by common agreement;
-There are different approaches to the problem, each have the objective to solve the psychological conflicts, which you suffer;
-Do not see a psychotherapist just as a doctor who examines you and gives a diagnostic;
-The relationship between a psychotherapist and patient is stronger, based on a transfer that also is part of the curing process;
-Based on absolute confidentiality you can present your problems and together with the therapist can establish a way to cure them;
-Within the therapy you have an extremely active role. You present the issues and together with the therapist you establish the priority of problems to be solved;
-Do not accept a therapy that never ends. You should know its objective and when it will end;
-Do not be afraid to ask how many sessions are needed for you to feel better.
A Psychologist:
-Is trained in psychology, the science that studies the human psyche;
-Studies the psychological evolution of an individual along his life;
-Has means to test and diagnose psychologically different categories of individuals, studies the psychology of a normal person as well as one with pathological psychological problem;
A Psychiatrist:
- Has studied medicine with a specialization in psychiatry;
- Focuses on pathological deviations;
A Psychotherapist:
- Is a psychologist or a psychiatrist with additional training;
- He/she cures a patient’s problems through appropriate therapeutic techniques.
It mainly depends on:
- the problems you are experiencing;
- the time you have at your disposal and even
In general, the sessions are fewer in the final stage of therapy.
When you feel that you do not benefit enough in relation to the time and money you spend, ask the therapist for an evaluation, if he/she does not initiate it.
If you do not like the therapist, you are not comfortable in his presence, you are reluctant to share your fears or you do not trust his techniques, than tell him. The problem may be solved or he can recommend you to another therapist.
Do not spend your time and money creating an additional stress on top of the problem you are trying to solve. Don’t be afraid. He/she will not be offended. No matter how good he/she is, there are times that we cannot communicate with certain people.
This depends also on the therapist, how soon have you announced that you cannot come and how often it is happening. Freud thought it important to charge even for sessions that the patient missed.
